Racism... A Cowardly Action

Growing up as part of the "born free generation" in a country where black people held the majority in various aspects of society, I had the privilege of witnessing a diverse and inclusive environment. While my parents rarely discussed their experiences pre-independence under British rule, they instilled in me a sense of pride in our shared journey and the importance of embracing our freedom. Surrounded by friends from diverse backgrounds, I never dwelled on the differences in our skin tones or heritage.
 
However, my perspective shifted when I moved to America and confronted the harsh realities of African American history, particularly the legacy of slavery. This newfound awareness stirred a range of emotions within me, from anger and disbelief to sympathy for those who had endured such injustices. Despite being saddened by this revelation, I struggled to fully comprehend with the struggles faced by my African American friends, as I had never personally experienced discrimination based on my color until I ventured to the Mid-West.
 
One impactful encounter occurred during my time working for a healthcare company that took me to rural areas in the Mid-West. A patient's blatant display of discrimination towards me, based solely on my race, left me stunned and shaken. In that moment, her words resonated with the deeply ingrained prejudices that persist in certain communities. While I was initially overwhelmed by a mix of emotions, including anger and sadness, I ultimately found solace in a powerful realization.
 
I learned that an individual's ignorance or hate should not be attributed to an entire race. Through reflection and guidance from a higher power, I understood that racism is a cowardly and baseless act that stems from learned biases rather than innate differences. It became clear to me that combating hate and discrimination requires a collective effort to foster understanding and unity across all races.
 
I urge those who have inherited generations of biased views to partake in a new movement of positivity and inclusivity. By promoting positivity and acceptance within our homes and communities, we can cultivate a generation free from racial prejudices. Let us remember that hate is taught and learned behavior, and it is within our power to break the cycle by choosing love, empathy, and understanding over division and discrimination.
